Mysor Zoo
Mysore ZooThe Mysore zoo was established under the royal patronage of Maharaja Chamaraja Wodeyar in 1892. It has gained the distinction of being one of the oldest zoos in the world. The Zoo Garden was created in a portion of the Summer Palace in the eastern part of Mysore city out of the maharaja’s love for nature. The Maharaja engaged the services of Mr. G.H. Krumbeigal, German landscaper and horticulturist, who had created the beautiful and the famous Brindavan Gardens in Krishnarajasagar and the Cubbon Park in Bangalore .

The Mysore zoo houses some rare and exotic birds and animals. Situated amidst lush green surroundings on the foot of Chamundi hills, the zoo has acquired fame for breeding some rare animal in captivity. This zoo has about 35 species of ornamental plants and 85 species of trees from India and abroad .The zoo houses animals from more than 40 different.

There are many native Indian animals as well, including Royal Bengal tigers, white tigers, elephants, giraffe, fallow deer, Himalayan black bear, Guar (Indian bison), white peafowl and Indian rhino. The zoo is also home to many other exotic creatures from around the world like Branary sheep, giraffe, hippos and gorillas. As of Jan 2006 it has prepared a plan worth Rs 5.5-crore to establish the center and forwarded the same to the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) for approval.

The zoo would become the first in the country to have an emergency mobile service to rescue animals fighting for life and cater to animals in and around Bandipur, Brahmagiri, Kanakapura, Madikeri and other wildlife sanctuaries

Brindawan Gardens

Brindawan GardensBrindawan garden is one of the most beautiful gardens in the country. It is also unique in its construction, very different from the other gardens in the country as it is laid across the River Cauvery below the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam. On the down stream of the Krishnaraja Sagar dam the garden is stretched out, with ornamented and well planed and well maintained lawns, pools and fountains. It is 150 acres in area and situated approximately 30 minutes drive away from Mysore .
Converting a dam site into a beautiful garden with colorful fountains and ponds downstream can be attributed to the engineering excellence of M Visheswariah. The dam is named Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) after Maharaja of Mysore, Krishnaraja Wodeyar, who had financed the novel project. This is privileged to be India 's first irrigation dam, built in 1924.

Brindavan Gardens are basically a terrace garden that has been landscaped with decorated steps where water flows in-between these ornate steps .The specialty of the Brindawan gardens is the dancing fountain. Here fountains dance on the tunes of music and make magnificent color patterns. The Musical fountains have spectacular harmony of water, colors and music. A myriad of fountains, cascading and springing into different shapes, amidst the surrounding greenery and flowers is wonderful sight for the tourist. The beauty of these fountains and the garden is such that during 1960s almost ever movie in India hand either a dance or song sequence picturized in the garden. It only stopped after shooting in the garden was banned. The entire garden was amended and renovated in December 2004 with new fountains and lights. There is a boating pond to cross the dam from the south bank to the north bank and at the northern edge are the dancing fountains where boating can be enjoyed with lots of fun.
