Mysor Palace
The official residence of the former royal family of Mysore, the Mysore Palace is the seat of the famed Wodeyar Maharajas of Mysore. Commissioned in 1897, its construction was completed in 1912 at a cost of Rs. 41, 47,913. It is now one of the most famous tourist attractions of Mysore visited by hundreds of people from all over the world daily.
Built in the Indo-Saracenic style, the Mysore Palace is a fine blend of Hindu, Muslim, Rajput, and Gothic styles of architecture. Standing 245 Ft in length and 156 Ft in width, the palace is a three-storied stone structure, with five marble domes (Kalash) and a 145 ft five-storied tower. This beautiful three storied stone building of fine gray granite with deep pink marble domes was designed by Henry Irwin. The facade has seven expansive arches and two smaller ones flanking the central arch which is supported by tall pillars. Above the central arch is an impressive sculpture of Gajalakshmi, the goddess of wealth with elephants. The palace is surrounded by a large garden.
This palace is built around a place called "Thotti" which is a large open space. To the east of ground floor there is huge elephant door. To the south there is huge and beautiful Kalyana Mantap where festivities take place. On the first floor facing eastern direction there is "Durbar Hall" or Court yard. For conducting personal meetings there is "Amba vilas" in this floor. There is also a fort on the western side of the palace which is almost in a square shape and has five entrances. To the east there is a huge main entrance called "Jaya Maarthaanda", to the north is "Jayarama" and "Balarama", to the south is "Varaha" , to the west is "Brahmapuri" and "Kari Kallu thotti" Main gates.
The Ambavilasa or Diwan- e- Khas, the octagonal Kalyana Mantapa, the Gombe Thotti or the Doll’s Pavilion, the Someshvara Temple, dedicated to god Shiva and the Lakshmiramana Temple, dedicated to god Vishnu are the other places within the palace that are worth visiting.
The Mysore Palace is sight to behold when the palace is lit up with lights on sundays, national holidays and during Dasara Navarathri festival from 7:00 p.m. to 8 p.m. People can sit in the palace gardens and enjoy the beauty of the palace. On regular days, the palace is opened from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m
The Philomena Church
One can see the twin spires of the Cathedral, 175 feet in height, from miles around making it a distinctive city landmark. The main hall or nave of the cathedral can seat up to 800 people and is as exquisitely made as the ornately crafted exterior with beautiful stained glass windows depicting scenes from the birth of Christ, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection and the Ascension of Christ.
Watching the illuminated church in the evening can be memorable sight for anyone. One can visit the church from 8.a.m to 5.pm daily.
